| Text | The Athletics visited Harrisburg on Friday last. Their visit was induced by a letter in the Mercury stating the desire the Governor expressed to see them play. His Excellency was in town last Monday, and repeated to one of our corps the pleasure it would afford him to see the Athletics “bat and field.” The Tyroleans, of Harrisburg, were also anxious to have a bout with the Athletics. Both clubs being willing, soon came to a mutual understanding, and the match was arranged for Friday last. The Athletic boys having a few hours to spare, called upon his excellency the Governor, who gave them a cordial welcome, and made the boys feel, as the Yankees say, “to home.” Wein Forney, Esq., State Librarian, and Col. Morgan, his polite assistant, showed them the wonders of the capitol, and pointed out to them whatever was worthy of interest in the way of a view from the cupola. ... We must not forget to mention that his Excellency Governor Curtin was an interested spectator [in the game], as also a large concourse of ladies and gentlemen. |
